How to Build an Autonomous SEO Agent with OpenClaw and Search Console

SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is one of the most repetitive tasks for anyone managing a digital product or a blog. You have to constantly analyze data, find "striking distance" keywords, figure out which pages are losing traffic, and plan new content.

It's an analytical job that requires patience and continuous monitoring. In other words: it's the perfect job for an AI agent.

Today I'll show you how I configured an autonomous SEO Agent using OpenClaw and the Google Search Console API. Instead of opening the Google dashboard every day, my agent analyzes the data, cross-references trends, and tells me exactly what I need to write to increase traffic.

Why an AI Agent for SEO?

Dashboards like Google Search Console or Ahrefs are powerful, but they require you to know what you are looking for. An AI agent powered by OpenClaw doesn't just show you a chart. It uses Large Language Models (LLMs) to reason about the data.

It can notice that a specific query is growing over the last 28 days, realize that you don't have a dedicated article for it yet, and directly propose a title and an outline. You go from having raw data to having actionable tasks ready to execute.

Step 1: Expose Search Console Data to OpenClaw

First, the agent needs access to the data. OpenClaw handles the interaction with the LLM, but you need to give it the tools (Skills) to talk to the outside world.

I created a simple Node.js script (gsc-query.mjs) that queries the Google Search Console APIs via a Service Account. The script supports different modes:

  • opportunities: finds queries in positions 8-20 with good impressions.
  • trends: compares the last 28 days with the previous 28 to find rising queries.
  • cannibalize: finds queries where two or more of your pages are competing.

The trick is to structure the script's output in a tabular or compact JSON format, so OpenClaw can read it without burning through too many tokens.

Step 2: Configure the OpenClaw Skill

Once the script is ready, we create a skill for OpenClaw by writing a SKILL.md file. This file explains to the agent how and when to use the tool.

Run `node resources/gsc-query.mjs --mode opportunities` to find low-hanging fruit keywords.
Always look for high-potential queries and suggest a content strategy based on this data.

OpenClaw reads this file, understands that it has an analysis tool at its disposal, and uses it autonomously when I ask "How is the blog doing today?" or when I schedule it via a cron job.

Step 3: The System Prompt and Automation

The real power comes when we combine these tools with a routine. In the system prompt of my "Scribe Agent", I added this instruction:

"Start every session by running GSC queries. Identify growing trends and write a post optimized for the most promising query."

Instead of me telling it what to do, the agent runs the script, parses the output, discards off-target queries, selects a keyword with low competition but good impressions, and starts drafting the article structure.

Real-World Workflow Impact

Since I delegated this analysis phase to OpenClaw, I no longer waste time digging through charts and tables. The agent spots patterns that I might ignore (for example, a specific technical feature searched by few but highly targeted users) and hands me the work already chewed up.

The "Agentic SEO" approach changes the game: it's no longer about generating random text with ChatGPT, but using AI to make strategic decisions based on real data from your web property, and then driving the content creation from there.

If you use OpenClaw, I highly recommend trying this pattern. Connect your primary data sources to your agents and let them propose the solutions. The ROI in terms of time saved is immediate.
